Night Drive
This week Texas duo Night Drive, read aka Brandon Duhon and Rodney Connell, share their debut EP Position 1 with BULLETT Magazine. This five-track EP includes singles “Drones” and “Sea of Light”, which were revealed earlier this summer, along with three brand new original singles.
According to Brandon and Rodney, “these songs are some of the very first we wrote together. Our initial connection was based on mutual interests. We are both fans of the movie Gattaca and there’s a scene where one of the characters is listening to something on headphones, so we thought it would be fun to write songs we thought he could be listening too.”
Indeed Position 1 is the type of music you would hear on a car stereo if Giorgio Moroder and Ray Bradbury were driving late at night through a buzzing metropolis. The EP opens with “Drones,” a track All Things Go called “energetic and rich in sound, engendering an ambience fitting for a sci-fi dystopian society.” Next, “No Plans” transports you into the halls of Shermer High School, dancing on tables and chairs with the rest of The Breakfast Club. Enter “Sea of Light,” the love song that rides a nu-wave of fast-tempoed, synth-based electronic sounds driven by rich guitar melodies and arresting vocal hooks. “Nocturnal” digs its heels in and pushes hard down on the pedal. Dark and brooding synths with equally ominous vocals create a track perfect to soundtrack a high speed car chase. Finally, “After Dark” completes the Position 1 narrative; spacey synths, funky basslines and syncopated handclaps come together to tell the story of an unrequited love.
