Thief
Thief was born when Sydney artist PJ Wolf traded in his guitars for synthesizers. Thief’s early demos found their way on to the internet and within weeks the blogosphere was alight with talk of this new Australian pop talent. Since his emergence as Thief, PJ has crafted a fresh minimalist sound rivalling the likes of contemporaries such as Metronomy, patient Miike Snow and Frank Ocean.
Today Thief shares fellow Aussie Diamond Cut’s remix of his single “Broken Boy”, off his four track debut EP Closer with Earmilk. Diamond Cut’s take on “Broken Boy” introduces a more uptempo beat, electrifying the piano further while adding deep riffs to the track.
In addition to “Broken Boy,” Thief’s EP features three more tracks that showcase his eclectic sound. Influences of Goyte come out in “Closer” while “Cold” is tinged with Pharrell inspired production. Closer already counts heavy hitting support from All Things Go and New York label and tastemakers Neon Gold Records who praise Thief for his “ice cold falsetto” and ability to create a pop tune “just warm enough to thaw your frozen heart” (it is winter after all). For the EP, Thief teamed up with renowned Brisbane-based producer Matt Redlich (Emma Louise, Hungary Kids Of Hungary, Yes You) to create four tracks that twinkle with glittering synths and anthemic melodies.
